Came here for a meal, really worth it, lovely food at a good price and dog friendly Would definitely come back

Good food fantastic landlord and landlady always fun functions. Love the personal touch when the landlady comes and sits with guests. Always interested to know what would make it a better experience for the guests.

Had the displeasure of being on the receiving end of the owners lack of customer service here on New Years Day. Myself and two friends opened a tab when we ordered food and drinks at lunch time yesterday, as most people do. After wed eaten we headed to the bar to pay. Upon asking to settle the tab we had to request to split it 3 ways, to which the barman (who we now know was the owner) replied that we could only split the tab between 2 cards, not 3. We awkwardly laughed as only assumed this could be a joke. He then stated that putting the tab through as 3 card payments is more expensive (as service provider will charge them each time the card is used) - I calmly argued that surely the costs of having a card machine are absorbed into their prices, as it is a running cost. This went on for a short exchanged, one of our party at one point questioning what he would have done had we all ordered and paid separately, he replied he would have had no choice but to put the card payments through. At this point, at a busy bar, the owner of the woodvale thought it was appropriate to say to me, a paying customer, fine well you clearly need the money more than I do and went to fetch the card machine. I was so shocked that someone working in a customer facing role would think this was an appropriate way to speak to someone simply trying to settle a tab that I only mustered you clearly dont need my custom in response, but was stunned at how rude he was, and later felt I should have taken him to task on his behaviour. I later called to vent my feelings about how he treats paying customers and although I did receive an apology for the comment, he refused to back down that he was within his rights to refuse us the use of the card machine, despite my repeated arguments that these costs should be absorbed, not dealt with by aggressively guilt tripping and insulting the customer. My friends and I wont be returning to the Woodvale as the owners clearly can do without my cash and feel a decent view from the beer garden gives them the right to treat customers as an inconvenience. I can highly recommend the Portland, just up the road, where the bar staff and owners are always pleasant and are happy to take my payments with a smile, not an arrogant attitude!

Lovely food nice staff nice to look out over the sea lovely boxing day meal
